Summertime in Wisconsin can get pretty hot, and may have you and your family reaching for cool treats to beat the heat. Last week we talked about the importance of keeping hydrated this summer (and year round!). While nothing is better for your body than drinking water, many of us would like to throw something sweeter into the mix as well. Smoothies are a great way to get your kids to add fruit and veggies into their diets, and can even be prepared ahead of time to ensure you always have a healthy meal or snack on hand!

One of the easiest ways to prep smoothies ahead of time is using zip-top bags. Simply decide what fruits and veggies you would like to use, cut them up or buy them already frozen at your local grocery store (you can even buy organic frozen fruit and veggies!) and place them in the bag. For a single serving of about 1.5 cups of smoothie, use 1 cup fruit, 1 cup veggies (we recommend using spinach or kale), and 1 cup liquid of your choice (milk, water, juice, tea). These measurements can easily be adjusted if you like the smoothie thicker, or if you want to make a family size smoothie to share! You can also add “boosters” to your smoothies for added nutrients. Examples of boosters include oils, probiotics, flax seeds, chia seeds, dynamic fruits and greens, or protein powder. Prepping multiple bags of various varieties doesn’t take long, and will ensure you have smoothies ready when you need them! The possibilities of flavors are endless, and can easily be customized to the tastes of everyone in your family. Once frozen, these smoothie bags can last up to 6 months in your freezer, but chances are they’ll disappear before then!
