In this blog, I want you to look at your health and wellness through a different lens. Most of us were raised to think that when we are sick, we need to take medications to feel better. But, what if I told you that your body knows exactly what to do? In chiropractic, we call this your body’s “innate intelligence” or your in-born ability to heal itself. When we get a cut on our finger, we do not have to tell our finger how to mend that wound, it just does it. Yes, sometimes we need a little help, like stitches if the injury is big enough. But even then, our body ultimately heals itself.

Our innate intelligence lives within our nervous system. Our nervous system, comprising our brain, spinal cord, and nerves, is the master system of our body. The nervous system tells the whole body what to do and when to do it. Clear communication between the brain and body ensures that the body is functioning well. If we have stress and tension in the nervous system, that can change its ability to tell the body how to function. If it’s not functioning properly, we get symptoms. That can be pain, chronic ear infections, chronic colds, respiratory issues, asthma, not sleeping well, digestive issues and the list goes on. Chiropractic adjustments restore the body’s function. Therefore restores the body’s innate ability to heal itself.

When our body is at optimal function, we can process illnesses more quickly and more effectively. The World Health Organization defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Healthy bodies process illnesses quickly and efficiently. You can have a cold or flu and still be considered healthy! It’s when diseases become chronic or recurring is when there is pause for concern. Chiropractors say that our initials “D.C.” stand for Doctor of Cause instead of Doctor of Chiropractic because we are looking for the root cause of illness and disease. Far before Chiropractic care was discovered, the great Greek physician Hippocraties said it best: “look well to the spine for the cause of disease.” While under consistent chiropractic care, many people experience less illness and more health!
